Murray is currently third in the world rankings, and was beaten by Del Potro at Indian Wells in the quarter finals last week. The Argentine went on to the final where he was beaten by Spaniard Rafael Nadal, and Del Potro believes this could be Murray’s year to make it to the top spot in the world.

“Murray is a big champion, he already won a grand slam, he made the finals in Australia [Australian Open] and he has everything he needs to be at the top in the future,” Del Potro told ESPN.

“He will be fighting for the No. 1 place this year and he can take a big opportunity in the grass season.”

Despite his comments, Del Potro has aspirations of his own to have a good grass court season and is eyeing up the Wimbledon title to add to his 2009 US open title he won, beating Roger Federer in the final.

Del Potro has confirmed he intends to compete in the AEGON Championships at Queen’s Club, where Murray will also be involved, so the pair could be on a collision course to meet again, where Murray will be looking to claim revenge for his Indian Wells loss.

Murray had a good grass court season last year, reaching the Wimbledon final and winning Olympic gold at the London 2012 games. He also won his first major at the US open.  Another solid year like that will see Murray catapulted into the number one spot overtaking long term rival Novak Djokovic for the first time, but only if he can add more grand slams this year.
