As the final whistle blows this weekend in the Nivea For Men’s SuperLeague we take a look back on the surprise results and upsets that occurred.

It was Moycullen who caused an unexpected result when they overcame an experienced DCU Saints team. Once again, the Galway side carried the game into overtime ensuring that their home crowd was kept entertained. This win marks their second victory of the season with both games spilling into overtime. For DCU, the Dubliners unfortunately now record their third loss in a row.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach of Moycullen, Salva Camps enthused, “That was a great competitive game of basketball and our guys played from start to finish!”

Salva added how important their supporters are to the team, “The home crowd were fantastic, they were our sixth man tonight. I am so happy for the club, the supporters and fans! It is a great result for the team.”

Meanwhile UCC Demons continued their unbeaten run after they faced off with Dublin Inter in the National Basketball Arena. The Cork side came away with the win on the road as newcomers Inter fought until the very end.  Regrettably for Dublin Inter, they suffer another loss as they adjust to playing in the SuperLeague.

Head Coach of UCC Demons, Paul Kelleher is happy with his team’s progress, “We played well as a team and moved the ball nicely. We were on point with our shot selection and defence but failed to keep our performance tight in the fourth quarter.”

Kelleher continued to pay tribute to his team’s progression, “We are taking a step in the right direction. Dublin Inter were very impressive in the fourth quarter but we stuck with it. We made good decisions by recognising who was hot and feeding them the ball, I can really see the growth in the team as the games go on.”

In Dublin, the UL Eagles landed in the IWA Clontarf and added another win to their sheet after their victory over Killester. With the Eagles on a nice run at the moment a win again Killester sets them up nicely in the league standings behind UCC Demons.

Mark Keenan, Head Coach of UL Eagles admitted, “We got off to a slow start and to be honest, Killester had the better exchanges in the first quarter. However, we settled ourselves and pushed out an eleven point lead at half time.”

Keenan highlighted the effort his side put together, “We only had 8 on the bench tonight but four of our guys were in double figures! Robert Taylor was in a league of his own also. It was a tough ask playing in the IWA but the team pulled it off.”

Bord Gais Neptune welcomed another victory to their record after an impressive win over UCD Marian. This is the second time for the two sides to meet this season, on the first occasion it was UCD who left the game successful however, it seems Neptune learned their lesson as they stole the win this time around. Unfortunately for UCD they now record their fourth loss on the bounce.

Happy with the result, Head Coach of UCC Demons, Mark Scannell said, “We had to dig deep to come away with that win, our American was out injured during the week but the Irish lads really stepped it up a gear.”

Scannell continued, “We were 6 down with 4 minutes to go but stepped up the defensive and it made a big difference. It was a tough game but I am delighted that we have another win under our belt.”

In the Nivea Women’s SuperLeague there were no league games to be played. However, the first fixture of the Women’s SuperLeague National Cup took place in the IWA Clontarf when Killester took on Ulster Rockets.

It was Ulster Rockets that progressed to the next round after they overcame Killester. With both teams coming off the back of tough losses the previous weekend, the cup was the perfect opportunity to shake off the league pressures and enjoy a run at the National Cup title.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach of Ulster Rockets, Breada Dick said, “With a low scoring game like tonight we have to praise the defensive efforts of both teams. It was an excellent game of basketball and we are delighted to progress to the next round of the National Cup.”

Breada continued to compliment her side and their teamwork, “Everyone was on point tonight, havingNoleen Lennon back made a huge difference for us especially inside under the basket. Both Fiona and Niamh Toner shot great for us tonight also so it really was a team effort.”
