Basketball Ireland Weekend Review – Killester beat UCC Demons

By
Updated: March 3, 2014

This weekend all eyes were firmly set on Cork as top of the table C&S UCC Demons prepared for a resilient Killester to arrive. The Dublin side proved their worth with an impressive team performance to see them trump the Cork men for the first time this season, 69 – 93.

In a game that will go a long way to deciding the winners of this season’s champions, the men in orange and black came out all guns blazing. Many people doubted their ability to top Demons, especially after previously results this season that saw them lead by as much as 14 points in the final quarter of the National Cup semi-final only to lose in overtime.

It was evident from their display that they had put everything out on the floor to earn this victory. They maintained a lead throughout the entire game and unlike other encounters, kept their cool then Demons tried to fight back.

Jonathan Grennell, head coach of Killester, said, “The final score of the game doesn’t in any way reflect the intensity of the game. It was a tough game but we came prepared and knew we had to come away with the win.”

“To be honest, I think we were without a doubt the more nervous team. Even in the final quarter we were aware of how our lead over Demons had gone in the past and knew we had to keep playing until the end. We stayed ahead by continuing to play aggressive but also by being mentally calm with our decisions and executions.”

“We learned a lot of lessons playing against Demons this year and in this game we were able to put into practice the changes that we need to implement in order to win. To come away with the points and deny them an extra bonus point will hopefully make a difference on the league table.”

“Next weekend is going to be tough but we are prepared. We decided as a team to treat the final three games of the season as a quarter, semi and final. Today we won our quarter final game so we need to go out and win the semi on Saturday night if we are to take the title. We can’t worry about Sunday just yet…”

Elsewhere in the Men’s Premier League, Dublin Inter failed to come away with a win after two losses to UL Eagles 65 – 72 and Bord Gais Neptune 65 – 71 respectfully. Meanwhile in Dublin, DCU Saints earned a win over SSE Renewables Moycullen 98 – 73 while UCD Marian lost to Belfast Star 85 – 93.

Also on Sunday, UL Eagles claimed their second win of the weekend when they overcame Templeogue, 92 – 85.

In the Women’s Premier League the stand out game of the weekend saw DCU Mercy come out on top with a one point win over a tough WIT Wildcats, 59 – 57. This win was crucial for the Dublin side as they look at making a convincing run in the play – offs.

Head coach, Mark Ingle said, “It was a great game, close from the jump to the final whistle. The lead changed consistently throughout the game so both sides were kept on their toes.”

“It literally came right down to the wire when Rachael Brittenham hit a shot from an end-line play with 6 seconds to go to see us take the lead by one point.”

“I am delighted with the result, it will give us the confidence and energy we need as we make a run at the play-offs.”

Meanwhile, Killester came out of a tough weekend with two big wins over Meteors, 51 – 69, and Singleton SuperValu Brunell, 49 – 70. However, not only did Singleton SuperValu Brunell loss to the Dublin side but they also missed out on another win when Team Montenotte Hotel Cork beat them 66 – 57. UL Huskies also continued their winning ways when take took on Liffey Celtics, 74 – 50.
