Ryan Mullen Wins Bronze Medal in the Individual Pursuit at the European Championships
Ireland’s Ryan Mullen has taken the Bronze Medal in the 4km Individual Pursuit at the European Under23 Track Cycling Championships in Portugal this evening. Having posted the third fastest time this morning, Mullen qualified for the Bronze Medal Final with France’s Julien Morice.
Mullen established an early lead over Morice, with a 1.4 second advantage after the first kilometre, extending his lead over the following laps. In the third kilometre Morice began to close the gap, but a strong closing kilometre for Mullen secured the Bronze Medal by almost 3 seconds. The gold and silver medals were taken by Kung (SUI) and Evtushenko (RUS) respectively.
Speaking from the Velodrome in Anadia, Head Coach Brian Nugent said “It is brilliant that Ryan went out and repeated the fantastic performance from this morning. He kept pulling away from the French guy, and when he started responding, Ryan pulled away again in the final kilo. This is a fantastic result for Ryan, who is in his first year as an under 23 rider. We are all delighted here, job done for today.”
Mullen is no stranger to the big stage, having won a Silver Medal on the Road at the European Junior Time Trial Championships last year, and has moved into the Senior ranks seamlessly. Next up for the Irish Team is on Thursday in the Sprint and the Scratch Race. Eoin Mullen, who raced the World Cups earlier this year, will contest the Sprint, with Ryan Mullen competing in the Scratch Race.
