Hibernia Basketball have given a clean bill of health ahead of the trip to Denmark for their first game in Group F of the FIBA Europe Cup. All 12 of the travelling squad were involved in Round 3 of the Men’s Premier League at the weekend and came through Tuesday’s training session at the National Basketball Arena unscathed.

The only major concern to the squad is the ongoing injury to Templeogue’s Jason Killeen, however the centre had not been named for the trip to face Bakken Bears on Wednesday October 28th.

Players from seven Premier League clubs make up the combined squad and the younger members especially are in confident mood. “I’ve never been part of something just to make up the numbers,” says Demons Guard Roy Downey.  “If you’re going, you’re going to win, like. We’re some of the best players in the country. There’s no reason why we can’t beat any players out in Europe.”

Basketball Ireland received a special derogation to enter into the FIBA Europe Cup, a second tier competition for professional teams in Europe. Hibernia Basketball is made up of amateur players.

“At the end of the day, you have to feed your family and you have to pay the bills,” says Martins Provizors. The big Latvian calls Swords his home these days. “The biggest problem was trying to make it happen between work and family.  But we love basketball. And chances like these don’t come around often.”
