DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) — Sebastian Coe says it is his “dream” to see the Olympics held in Africa and he will try to help bring the games to the continent for the first time.
Coe, who heads the organizing committee of the London Olympics, says “I will do what I can” to help Africa’s efforts after the 2012 Games.
The former middle-distance running great also thanked former South African President Nelson Mandela for supporting London’s successful bid.
On a visit Tuesday to Tanzania, Coe said: “Like many around the world, it would also be a dream for me to see the games staged on this continent.”
South Africa considered launching an Olympic bid following the success of the 2010 football World Cup but decided not to try for the 2020 Summer Games. It is expected to bid for 2024.
