Teenager Mullen storms to 7th place in U23 TT, Christie finishes 28th at World Championships in Italy
Ireland’s Ryan Mullen demonstrated the strength and depth of his talent in the U23 Time Trial today at the World Championships, finishing in 7th place out of 74 starters in the 42.79km race against the clock. Teammate Marcus Christie finished in a strong 28th place, in the event that was won by Australia’s Damien Howson, ahead of Paillot (France) and Hansen (Denmard). The UCI Road World Championships in Toscana, Italy started this week, and run from the 22nd – 29th September.
19 year old Mullen is in his first year racing as a senior, and has already stamped his mark in track cycling, winning two Bronze medals in the European U23 Championships earlier this summer. Last year, while still in the junior ranks, the Wales based rider won a silver medal in the Time Trial at the European Championship. Mullen, who races for Team IG Sigma Sport, held an average speed of 50.517kmph, and was 45 seconds faster than the next placed 19 year old, Maximilian Schachmann (Germany).
Speaking after the race Head Coach Brian Nugent said “Ryan rode a solid and strong race. He was up in the top half dozen at each time check, and was solid in every section. It was a world class ride; he left nothing out there, and was very technical on the tight corners.”
Christie, who has made a powerful comeback to the racing scene, also finished strongly in the same event, finishing in 28th place. Nugent said “Marcus had a very solid ride in his first ever road World Championships. Everything went to plan, and it was really good experience for him to build on in the future.
With this being the first event for the Irish Team in the Road World Championships 2013, Nugent said “this is a great way to start the campaign.”
Tomorrow will see Mark Dowling compete in the Junior Men’s Time Trial. This will be a 25.34km race against the clock in Florence. On Wednesday afternoon Nicolas Roche will compete in the Men’s
Elite Time Trial.
The Championships run from the 22nd – 29th September, in Florence, Italy.
