Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley confirmed today that he will be selecting three wild card pick for next year’s competition at Gleneagles in Scotland.
In previous years captains such as Jose Maria Olazabal, Nick Faldo and Ian Woosman have only had two wild card picks but the Dubliner welcomed the move and said it was something that needed to be “nipped in the bud.”
Following the decision McGinley alluded to the fact that it now offered him a broader range of choices and said that players who are concentrating on the European Tour rather than climbing world rankings have just as much chance of making the team, given the tours very high standard. He went on to say that he hadn’t lined up players to be vice captains at this early stage.
In an eventful day at Gleneagles the R&S and USGA have confirmed that they will be banning anchored putters as of 2016.
