The Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council has announced  the initial batch of athletes selected to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The first thirty-three competitors, from five sports, are named with just over 3 months to go until the high profile event kicks off on 23 July.

One of the first athletes selected is full-bore shooter David Calvert, who is the most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete ever. He will attend his 10th Games, unprecedented in the history of the Games. He has won 4 Gold and 4 Bronze medals so far, having competed in consecutive Games from 1978 to present.

Paddy Barnes, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Bronze Medallist, will look to defend his Commonwealth title after capturing Gold at the 2010 Games in Delhi, India. Another 2012 Olympic Bronze Medallist and 2nd in the AIBA World Rankings, Michael Conlan is looking to capture his first Commonwealth Games medal. Michaela Walsh and Alanna Murphy will make Northern Ireland’s debut in Women’s Boxing. This sport is included in the Games for the first time. There will be a box-off for additional places on 2nd May in the Dockers Club.

Madeline Perry, currently 8th in the Squash World rankings, will be competing in her 5th Games since her first appearance in 1998. A leading Northern Ireland competitor will be 2012 Olympian Lisa Kearney who seeks to add to her 2013 World Cup gold.

Women bowlers line up with five players, including Barbara Cameron who first competed in 1994. These bowlers will be under the guidance of experienced outdoor and indoor international Sally McGarel.
