The third Ashes test began on Thursday and Australia have put themselves in a good position as day two draws to a close.
Two heavy defeats in the first two test matches have England in control of the series and the chances of a 5-0 series whitewash were being fancied.
Australia will have done a lot of soul searching since the second test finished. They are a proud nation and the cricket team is one the most treasured by the Aussie public. They have been heavily criticised and they have looked like a shadow of previous Australian teams. At 2-0 down they will need a miracle to win the series but the third test has seen pride restored already.
Their batting line-up has been very poor and the openers have bared the brunt of most of the negativity that has run through the Australian squad. They have responded emphatically so far in the third test. Finishing at 303-3 on day one, they continued their good run rate on day two declaring on 527-7. They allowed themselves 32 overs of bowling on day two to try and give themselves a chance of winning the test match.
Draws are of very little use to Australia and the declaration on day two is a sign of their intent to win. England have had a steady start to their first innings and they look to have a strong reply to the target that Australia have set. So far the third test has mainly been about Australia. The quality of their fight-back has been admirable; they have restored some pride in themselves and their nation. They will now look to win the test to give themselves something to play for in the final two test
