On Monday night, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic took part in an epic four-set encounter at Flushing Meadows in New York as they battled it out for the chance to win the final Grand Slam of the year.
In the end, it was Spaniard Nadal who emerged victorious as he took control of the match from early on to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
And aside from dropping the second set against Djokovic, he rarely looked as though he was going to falter on the big occasion.
In truth, it was a tremendous victory for Nadal, and it was made all the sweeter considering his spate of knee injuries over the past year.
At one point, he didn’t play any competitive action for seven whole months as it looked as though his career could well come to an unspectacular end on the sideline.
However, his determination to not give up on winning another title egged him on to win at Roland Garros this year. And despite yet another set back at Wimbledon earlier this year, the 27-year-old managed to put all that behind him in order to be mentally and physically fresh for his big moment.
His US Open victory brings his total tally of Grand Slam wins up to 13, which is second only to Pete Sampras and Roger Federer.
Amazingly, with Nadal five years Roger Federer’s junior, and with only four titles separating them in the list, it promises to be an interesting 2014 for the Manacor born player as he looks to close the gap on his Swiss rival.
Does he have the mentality to equal or even eclipse the great Federer? Or will injuries debilitate him once more?
However, for now, Nadal can simply bask in the glory of his success. And so, it’s time for SportsNewsIreland to take a look back at some of the best tweets as the US Open drew to a close:
