It appears to be unlucky 13 for Rory McIlroy as his annus horribilis continued at the BMW Championship in Illinois after carding a 7 over par 78 to leave him 15 shots behind the leader Brandt Snedeker and almost sure to miss the cut.
Finishing his 18 holes at Conway Farms Golf Club with a card that might make an ametuer blush the man from Holywood Co Down runs a real risk of not making the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week. McIlroy requires a top 8 finish in Illinois to secure his place at the end of tour money spinner but there seems little chance of achieving that goal. McIlroy’s round featured bogeys, double bogeys and a triple bogey at the 1st the one moment of relief was a birdie at the 16th.
McIlroy has failed to win a tournament since signing his $200 million dollar contract with Nike. His best finish has been second place at the Texas Open, in February McIlroy withdrew from the Honda Classic citing a toothache as the deciding factor. With an on again off again high profile relationship, a 9 figure sports equipment contract, a habit of rash comments and the pressure of being the next huge star perhaps it is understandable that McIlroy has had a tough year.
It may well be time cut back on the distractions get his head down and remind us all of the cheeky grin beneath the mop of curls that strode around the course of the British Open like he was born to be there.
