A Galileo Filly has smashed records as the most expensive yearling filly ever sold at public auction when selling to Sheikh Joaan al Thani’s Al Shaqab Racing for 5,000,000 guineas.
Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in Newmaket Tuesday got off to a strong start on Tuesday with a 3,600,000gns Galileo brother to Secret Gesture hitting the headlines as the most expensive yearling ever bought in Europe
.However the record was smashed within 24 hours, as Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore International , acting on behalf of Qatar’s Sheikh Joaan al Thani’s Al Shaqab Racing, saw off John Magnier for a Galileo sister to Oaks heroine Was for 5,000,000gns (£5.25million).
This forms the new record for the most expensive yearling to be sold in Europe along with the most expensive yearling filly ever.
The filly who was by Champion sire Galileo and out of Alluring Park was bred and sold by the Burns family of Lodge Park Stud in county Kilkenny.
She is the third yearling out of the Listed-placed Alluring Park to sell for over a million. Was topped the 2010 sale at 1.2 million gns, and Al Jassasiyah, who was last year’s dearest filly when also selling to Mandore for 1.5 million gns.
Alluring Park herself is out of Irish Champion Filly Park Express and is a half sister to top sire New Approach.
The filly is set to be trained in France by legendary trainer Andre Fabre.
Nicolas de Watrigant said : “She is a magnificent specimen.
“We bought her sister last year and we think she could be special.
“We didn’t want to miss this one – let’s hope she is the next Treve.
“We didn’t expect to pay that sort of price, but Al Shaqab Racing is keen to invest.
“She goes into training with Monsieur Fabre.”
