Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies had done a remarkable job in returning the star to full fitness, with Imperial Commander impressing when finishing second in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham in January.

Big things were expected in Friday week’s 2013 Gold Cup, but sadly, the former Gold Cup winner has been ruled out. This will be a crushing blow to punters, as they will lose any ante-post money they may have placed on the resurgent thoroughbred.

Twiston-Davies said: “He’s got a lung infection so he won’t be going to Cheltenham – that’s that.

“What can you do? It’s an absolute sickener but they are very delicate creatures.

“I’m sure he’s still as good as ever, he’s been in great form, but you can’t rush them. Hopefully he’ll be okay for Liverpool.”
