Willie Mullins has surpassed Aidan O’Brien’s record as he saddled his 156th winner of the Irish jumps season at Fairyhouse on Saturday.

Willie Mullins had a day he will not forget for a long time on Saturday in Fairyhouse as he surpassed Aidan O’Brien’s record when he saddled his 156th winner of the Irish jumps season. Glens Melody took the I.T.B.A Fillies Scheme Novice Hurdle and equalled the record for Mullins.

And little more than half an hour later, Mullins saddled his second winner of the day when Away We Go took the Attheraces.com Handicap Hurdle under Townend.

This gave Mullins his 156th winner of the Irish jumps season and the new record. The Champion trainer does not look like slowing down as he has major chances to extend his record in Naas on Sunday and in the coming weeks. The Carlow man is sure to have a stranglehold on Irish National Hunt racing for some time to come.

“I didn’t dream at the start of the year that it would be anything like that but I think the wet summer suited us,” Mullins told At The Races.

“We had a lot of winners with horses that we would have usually thrown out to grass as the ground stayed in their favour.

“The horses are just in form. Hopefully they can stay like that for another few weeks.”
