Capital One Cup round up & results

Manchester United reached the fourth round of the Capital One cup with a 2-1 win over Newcastle and Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were joined in the next round by Arsenal, Liverpool, Reading, Norwich and Spurs.

Goals from Anderson and Tom Cleverley helped United to a narrow home win over Newcastle in a game that also saw the return to action of Wayne Rooney.

Meanwhile Arsenal latest batch of exciting youngsters enjoyed a comfortable evening at the Emirates as they ran out 6-1 winners over Coventry. Oliver Giroud’s first goal for the Gunners, the highlight of a good evening’s work that also included a brace from Theo Walcott as well as efforts from Miguel, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andrei Arshavin.

Jerome Sinclair became Liverpool’s youngest ever debutant when he came on the field of play in the 81st minute of their clash with WBA. The youngster, who only turned 16 five days ago, came on moments before Nuri Sahin scored his second of the night to give Liverpool a 2-1 win.

Tottenham beat Carlisle United 3-0 away thanks to goal from Jan Vertonghen, Andros Townsend and a late Gylfi Sigurdsson goal while Pavel Pogrebnyak scored nine minutes from time to give Reading a morale boosting 3-2 win over fellow Premier League strugglers QPR.

Chris Hughton’s Norwich side needed a debut goal from Alexander Tettey to get the better of League One Doncaster 1-0 at Carrow Road
