As the debate about who should replace Rafael Benitez as Chelsea manager continues to rumble on, Petr Cech has said he would welcome the return of Jose Mourinho.
With Chelsea fans continuing to express their discontent with the appointment of Benitez as interim manager, it is clear the Spaniard will not be offered an extension beyond this season. Benitez has been in turmoil with the Chelsea fans since the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo and his subsequent instalment as interim boss, with the lack of mutual respect culminating in the former Liverpool boss’ public lambasting of the board and supporters last week.
Fans have called for the return of ‘The Special One’, Jose Mourinho, as his exit from the Bernabeu looks likely in the summer. The Real Madrid manager enjoyed a highly successful period at the helm of the West London club, winning two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and two League Cups. The Chelsea fans expressed their desire for Mourinho’s return by chanting his name during Saturday’s win over West Brom, sentiments that were echoed by their goalkeeper Petr Cech.
“We had fantastic success with [Mourinho], so why not? He is a fantastic manager,” Cech told the Daily Star. “Jose Mourinho did a fantastic job for the club and people loved him, so he rightly deserved that.”
“This is the way it should be, the fans should pay their respect for the players and ex-players who come here to the Bridge.”
Chelsea are currently in fourth place in the Premier League, two points behind Tottenham in third. Despite their inconsistent season, a second-place finish is certainly within reach, with the Londoners trailing Manchester City by just four points.
