Speaking at a press conference in California, Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has thrown his future up in the air by claiming he doesn’t know where his future lies. “My future; I don’t know”, said Ronaldo, speaking in English. Rumours of a return to Manchester United will not go away. It seems strange that a deal would not have happened already this summer but all does not seem to be well with Ronaldo at the Bernabeu.
Roanldo added, “In this moment I’m a player of Madrid and the future I really don’t know”. It throws new information to the media to kick off new speculation. Diego Torres, journalist at Spanish broadsheet, El Pais, suggested last week that Madrid’s strong pursuit of Gareth Bale was a result of Ronaldo’s decision to move away. New Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, suggested a few weeks ago that there was “no question” of Ronaldo leaving but these words from Ronaldo suggest otherwise.
Spanish journalists have been suggesting all summer that it is a case of money for Ronaldo who wants to put himself in the strongest negotiating position as possible when the time comes to sign a new deal. He only has two years remaining in his current deal which allows Ronaldo to hold a very strong hand if Real Madrid want to hold onto their prized asset. The attempt to sign Bale and Ronaldo’s possible departure does kind of add up. It’s hard to see where Bale would fit into the Madrid side and it’s hard to imagine why they would break the world record for an unproven player when they already have a wealth of attacking options.
On the potential signing of Bale, Ronaldo said, “I am not going to speak about that because I am not the right person to say if he (Bale) deserves that money, if he’s a good deal or not”, suggesting that he is not overly exciting by the potential move. He stayed very reserved on the whole affair and it seems that Ronaldo’s relationship with the club isn’t very good. Important members of the club like Roman Calderon have suggested that Ronaldo does not have a good relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez which adds more to a possible move.
On the opposite side of the fence, Spanish newspaper Marca, who are synonymous with Real Madrid, claims that there is an “agreement” between Ronaldo and Real Madrid to sign a new contract to keep him at the club until 2018. They generally have a lot of substance to their stories regarding Real Madrid but it seems very appropriate that Ronaldo casting doubts on his future has been accompanied by their newspaper suggesting that Ronaldo has finally decided to stay or at least allow Madrid to recoup a massive transfer fee should he decide to leave.
These words from Ronaldo give fresh hope to Manchester United fans. One would think that United still hold a special place in Ronaldo’s heart and a return to Old Trafford would be a great fit. David Moyes needs a marquee signing to kick off his regime in charge and who better than Ronaldo to fit the bill. It would help Moyes to get the United fans on side and it would also help him to create a strong team. It’s hard to see a deal being sorted at this stage of the transfer window but these words from Ronaldo will excite the United faithful.
