It would appear that next month’s crunch World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Sweden is not the only issue that’s weighing heavily on Irish players’ minds of late as Everton attempt to push through a deal for two Republic of Ireland internationals before the transfer window closes.
As reported by TribalFootball.com, Everton boss Roberto Martinez is still interested in signing both James McCarthy and Aiden McGeady and both are odds on to be at Goodison before the end of the transfer window.
With McCarthy now plying his trade in the Championship, this would be the perfect opportunity for him to bounce straight back up to the big-time to face off against regular top-quality opposition. And with this season being a World Cup season – provided Ireland qualify – he could do with all the preparation he can get.
As for McGeady, a return to British football would certainly do him no harm whatsoever. His move to Spartak Moscow has seen him perform quite well for them overall, however his performances in the green of Ireland have often been uninspired and unimaginative.
Perhaps, a change of scenery would be just the ticket for him to re-invigorate his international form.
The potential transfer of these two players could also prove beneficial for David Moyes.
The Scot has been in the hunt to sign midfield leader Marouan Fellaini ever since he joined the Red Devils as manager, and if McCarthy were to join the Toffees, they would have a suitable replacement, and a move to the exit door would seem more likely for Fellaini.
A lot hangs in the balance here. We’ll just have to wait and see how it pans out, although both bids are expected to go through within the next 48 hours.
