On Tuesday, soccer fans got a big surprise as their run-of-the-mill midweek pint was transformed into something a little bit unexpected and out of the ordinary.
Republic of Ireland star, Jason McAteer, Liverpool legend John Barnes and Sky Sports presenter Rachel Wyse sprung the surprise on the punters as part of Carlsberg’s new launch of their ‘Be There Next Campaign’.
The campaign will reward committed Irish Premier League fans with money-can’t-buy experiences such as winning VIP trips to Premier League games, presenting Man of the match awards to players and many more amazing prizes.
The location was Bar 37 on Dawson Street which received a ‘Carlsberg Ulimate Football Bar’ makeover for the day as fans were afforded the rarity of being served pints by tw0-time FA Cup winner Barnes.
Perhaps the Merseyside football hero has decided to turn to bar management, as his last stint with Tranmere as manager didn’t quite work out for him.
The former Watford and Charlton Athletic man said: “It was the surprise of a lifetime for Irish football fans and such a great experience for me. I personally always love coming to Dublin and really enjoyed being barman for the day and pulling pints of Carlsberg – although it took me a few attempts to get the perfect pint! It was great to see some of the reactions of the fans and of course spend time with them talking about football.”
Meanwhile, former Blackburn Rovers player and dispatcher of Dutch international sides McAteer found himself as doorman for the evening.
It seems it was more ‘back of the queue’ and less ‘back of the net’ for the evening.
Also speaking at the launch was Julie Allman, Carlsberg senior brand manager, who said: “We really wanted to kick off our official beer sponsorship of the Premier League with something extra special for Irish football fans to enjoy, something totally unexpected that money simply couldn’t buy for them. What better than to surprise them by creating the Ultimate Carlsberg football bar and give them the opportunity to meet true football legends.”
