Shay Given has told the Irish Sun that he is considering a return to international football following his retirement after Ireland’s poor form at Euro 2012.
The Aston Villa keeper made it known that he would like to add his experience to Ireland’s World Cup qualifying campaign and will consider his international future in the New Year.
Following a string of poor performances at the European Championship, Given told the paper that he quit international football to concentrate on his club career although he has fallen out of favour at Villa.
Writing in his weekly column Given said, “I do miss playing for Ireland and we will see what happens in 2013.”
Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has welcomed the news ahead of the Ireland’s crunch tie away against Sweden in March.
Speaking to the Irish Sun Trapattoni said the he wants to talk to Given this week with a view to recalling him for Ireland’s friendly with Poland in February.
Trapattoni said, “I am very happy that Shay has got over the disappointment of the Euros and would be happy to see him available again. I will be in touch with him to discuss it shortly.”
