Irish football fans believe that goalkeeper Shay Given will be the nation’s star performer at this summer’s European Championships.
In a poll conducted by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), it is clear that Irish supporters believe that the Irish team will spend plenty time on the back foot with center-half stalwart Richard Dunne coming in in second place in the poll.
The Aston Villa pair garnered well over 60% of the vote in a clear indication of how Irish fans believe the campaign will pan out in what is a very difficult group for the Boys in Green.
Wing sensation James McClean – a player by no means certain of being on the plane to Poland – came in third place in the vote with a total of 16% while surprisingly goalscoring lynchpin Robbie Keane polled just 10% of the vote. If anything this is further indication of how Irish fans feel most of the games will be played by Ireland; that is defensively.
The most surprising name to feature on the poll of potential Irish stars for the Euro was that of center-half Paul McShane who tallied 3% of the vote; amazingly coming in ahead of star man Damien Duff who totaled just 2% of votes with Keith Andrews (2%), Aiden McGeady and John O’Shea (both 1%) also registering.
The FAI asked: Which of the following Republic of Ireland players do you think will make the most impact in Euro 2012?
1. Shay Given 41%
2. Richard Dunne 24%
3. James McClean 16%
4. Robbie Keane 10%
5. Paul McShane 3%
6. Damien Duff 2%
7. Keith Andrews 2%
8. Aiden McGeady 1%
9. John O’Shea 1%
