Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association following an off the ball incident which took place during Chelsea’s dramatic late win over Wigan.
Ivanovic was caught on camera punching Latics’ midfielder Shaun Maloney in the stomach shortly before Chelsea’s winning goal.
The Serbian international has vowed to appeal but he does not appear to have much of a case however as he was clearly caught red handed for all to see.
The FA does not entertain cases which have been seen by the match but referee Mike Jones confirmed that neither he nor his assistants had seen the incident.
An FA Regulatory Commission will hear the case on Friday based on video evidence and written submissions. Reports from Stamford Bridge suggest that Ivanovic agrees that there was contact but disputes the fact that it was violent.
Ivanovic faces a three game ban but that could be increased should the appeal be deemed ‘frivolous.’
