Shamrock Rovers were on the receiving end of a 4-0 loss at the hands of Liverpool at the Aviva Stadium this evening.
Goals from Iago Aspas, Fabio Borini, Martin Kelly and Jack Dunn saw off the League of Ireland outfit, on a day when there were far more fans present to see Brendan Rodger’s nearly men than the Irish team competing.
First team players like Martin Skertel and Coutinho were initially expected to play, and while both were included in the match day twenty-three, neither featured. Instead it was left to a group largely made up of fringe players to lead the team to victory.
But for some wasteful finishing from youngster Jordan Ibe the score could have been higher, but in truth Liverpool were never really forced out of second gear here. Rovers’ coach Trevor Croly would have been happy to see his team remain competitive throughout though. Although this was a glamour tie of sorts for the Hoops, their focus must quickly shift to their home tie against bottom club Athlone Town this Saturday.
Highlights off the pitch included an array of colourful fans at the game old and new in what was a vibrant and upbeat atmosphere. Indeed, many fans had already taken their seats before the players had even come out onto the pitch to warm up. Early on a plane flew over the Aviva Stadium with a banner reading ‘Giggs 13 Gerard 0′ a reference to the amount of Premier League titles Ryan Giggs has won compared to Liverpool captain Steven Gerard.
Liverpool also wore their new yellow third kit that they will be using in some competitive fixtures next season for the first time. Today also marked the fourth birthday of the Aviva Stadium.
