Liverpool are preparing a bid to sign Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol in the summer according to reports.
Despite signing a new long term deal just last year, the defender’s future at the Bernabeu looks uncertain, after a year of injuries and being left out whilst youngster Raphael Varane played.
Brendan Rodgers sees the 27-year-old as an ideal replacement for retiring Jamie Carragher, but with so long left on his contract, it would be difficult to come up with enough money.
The Liverpool board have already reportedly refused to back their manager in pursuit of Swansea defender Ashley Williams, and they may do so again in pursuit of a defender who has a poor track record with injuries.
There is no doubt Liverpool need to strengthen their back line, with Martin Skrtel’s future still uncertain and Sebastian Coates seeking a move away too, the Reds defence is depleted and money needs to be pumped in to the squad.
Albiol, who can also play at right-back and in defensive midfield, would provide a versatile figure at the back for the Reds, and it would seem as though he will be seeking a move, especially with Jose Mourinho, the man who gave him a new deal, reportedly leaving in the summer.
