He has often being accused of not bringing his club form to the National team however Lionel Messi put that argument to bed last night, for the moment anyway, as he hit a superb hat trick to help Argentina to a 4-3 win over South American rival’s Brazil.

The diminutive forward was part of an experience Argentine side that took on a youthful Brazil side in New Jersey and the Barcelona man kept up his remarkable scoring form with his 81st goal of the season for club and country.

Romulo put Brazil ahead on 23 minutes before Messi grabbed equalised on 31 minutes after a wonderful through ball from Gonzalo Higuain.

Messi out Argentina in front three minutes later with his second before efforts from Oscar (56 min) and Chelsea bound Hulk on 72 minutes put Brazil in control with 18 minutes left.

Federico Fernandez became the game’s 5th different goal scorer when he levelled matters once more with 14 minutes left before Messi saved the best till last as he grabbed his hat-trick with a stunning effort to seal the win.

Speaking afterwards, Messi said: “This kind of triumph make us stronger as a team and group and helps us to grow up even more.

“Despite being a friendly, it is always nice to defeat Brazil. I’m also very happy with my three goals, it’s not common see seven goals in Argentina versus Brazil.”

Messi lined up alongside Sergio Aguero and Higuain in a strong looking Argentina side and the Barcelona star was happy to be in such good company.

“It is very nice to play with huge players like Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain. This result is good for and for them, for all my team-mates.”
