The Leeds United midfielder was handed the late call up to the Irish squad after David Meyler was ruled out of contention because of a knee injury picked while playing for Hull City in a 1-0 defeat to Millwall. Meyler had joined the squad in Dublin after the match but was forced to return to his club for treatment to the injury. In his place, Green will travel to Malahide on the eve of the friendly game to join his teammates.
The assistant manager Marco Tardelli earlier admitted that Darron Gibson had turned down the opportunity to replace Meyler. Having recently returned from injury, the Everton midfielder told the Irish staff that he did not feel adequately fit. Tardelli stated ““He (Gibson) told us that he had played just one match and that he preferred to stay at home, that he wasn’t available because he had a little problem after the match (against Aston Villa).”
