Prolonged abusive chants rung around the stadium during the opening minutes. ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ was easy to hear.

Stamford Bridge’s PA announcer had to raise his voice above the boo’s to announce a minute’s applause for former Chelsea manager and England U21 boss Dave Sexton, who has passed away over the weekend.

Benitez has come under fire for comments he made about Chelsea fans ahead of a vital Champions League semi-final with Liverpool in 2007.

He said during the week : “The priority of the fans will be winning games. I will do my best as a manager to do this.

“It’s not easy at the beginning but at the end I think they will be pleased.

“I want to do the right things for the fans. I am sure they will be happy with a manager with a winning mentality and passion for the game.”
