Real Madrid will need to score away at Old Trafford in three weeks time after Man Utd got a 1-1 away draw thanks to Danny Welbeck goal.

David De Gea tipped Fabio Coentrao’s shot onto the post before Welbeck nodded in Wayne Rooney’s corner.

Cristiano Ronaldo levelled when he leapt to head Angel Di Maria’s cross.

De Gea saved well to deny Coentrao again but Robin van Persie wasted a great chance to nick it but mis-cued with only keeper Diego Lopez to beat.

The Dutchman had hit the bar moments earlier, but he then latched onto Phil Jones’ header and mis-kicked the ball with Xabi Alonso clearing off the line.

Sami Khedira drew another save from the impressive De Gea, who was the busier of the two keepers, but United will be buoyed by an intelligent defensive performance.

Jones and Michael Carrick were composed in midfield, ahead of the solid centre-back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans.

And they will hope that with the home leg on 5 March, their fine form at Old Trafford will give them a slight advantage.
