Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane has been unveiled as the new captain of the LA Galaxy. With the new season set to get underway shortly, the Galaxy manger Bruce Arena made the announcement at a press conference.

David Beckham has departed for Paris, and Landon Donovan has taken a sabbatical, leaving the way clear for the Irish man to take over the captains armband.  Keane was vice-captain last season, during which he scored 16 goals during the regular season and six more in the play-offs.

“Robbie Keane will be our captain to start the season, and he will be our captain this season,” Arena told reporters. “(Keane is) a fabulous choice as captain. He’s a quality player, he’s a quality leader, so Robbie’s prepared to lead this team.”

Having captained the Irish national side on a number of occasions during his long and distinguished career, Keane looks well up to the task, and it will also help raise his profile and that of the club.
