Reports are coming from RTÉ that their top soccer commentator George Hamilton is recovering in hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack on Tuesday.

Sixty year old Hamilton has been on our screens for over thirty years, starting off with BBC and then moving on to co-present Know Your Sport with Jimmy McGee. He then got the job as chief soccer commentator on RTÉ. Every Irish fan will remember his famous phrase describing David O’Leary’s penalty against Romania in Italia 90, “A nation holds its breath”.

He is presently recovering in the Blackrock Clinic, where he has undergone several hours of emergency bypass surgery. He remains in a serious but stable condition.

Ore thoughts go out to his wife Meredith and all his family.
