Shelvey double hands Liverpool win

Updated: September 20, 2012

Jonjo Shelvey came off the bench to give Liverpool an opening day victory in their Group A Europa League clash away to Swiss side Young Boys.

With the score-lines tied at 3-3, Shelvey’s introduction changed proceedings, with the young midfielder scoring a brace in the final 14 minutes to hand Liverpool a 5-3 win.

Liverpool have struggled for goals and wins so far this seasons however they went ahead in comical circumstances in the 4th minute when Christoph Spycher headed the ball onto the head of Juhani Ojala who could only watch on as the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Young Boys drew level on 38 minutes when Raphael Nuzzolo punished a poor clearance by Jose Enrique however Andre Wisdom scored with a fine header just two minutes later to hand Liverpool a half time advantage.

The lead didn’t last long into the second half however as Ojala scored again, this time his header going into the right net. The goal spurred Young Boys on and they took the lead in spectacular fashion when Gonzalo Zarate scored with a lovely chip

Sebastian Coates levelled matters once again when he headed home unmarked before the introduction of Shelvey spun the game in Liverpool’s favour.

The former Charlton man hit home a first time shot from 12 yards on 76 minutes before hitting a belter from 20 yard 2 minutes from the end to hand Liverpool a much needed win.
