Sunderland left their early season woes behind them Sunday afternoon as they beat Stoke 4-0 at the Stadium of Light. Goals from Titus Bramble, Craig Gardner, Sebastian Larsson and an own goal from Jonathan Woodgate helped Sunderland to an easy victory.

Sunderland started well and Titus Bramble opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Stoke failed to deal with a corner and Bramble scored from about ten yards.

Things got worse for Stoke six minutes later, as Jonathan Woodgate scored an own goal. Kieran Richardson sent a great cross into the Stoke area and an under pressure Woodgate headed the ball over Begovic in the Stoke goal.

Craig Gardner then scored in the 28th minute to give Sunderland a commanding 3-0 half-time lead.

Sebastian Larsson made in four in the 58th minute when he executed a brilliant free kick. Begovic took a step to the wrong side of the goal and should have done better.

The result is a setback for Stoke, who had started the season well and claimed eight points from four matches. Steve Bruce will be hoping the win will kick-start Sunderland’s season
