With Ireland’s World Cup dreams and Trapattoni’s tenure as Ireland manager hanging by a thread the next stop for the boys in green is the beautiful city of Vienna.

Level on points with Ireland, Austria will be hoping that 3 points secured against the Irish will keep them in touch with Sweden for in the race for second place in Group C. Their final two games are on the road with the 11th of Oct clash with Sweden the possible decider for second place. Their final game sees them land and the windswept shores of the Faroe Islands a game in which they will expect to secure 3 points.

Sweden will be facing a long trip to the Urals to face a Kazakhstan team that made Ireland sweat before eventually losing 2-1 and held the Austrians to a nil all draw. Erik Harmén’s team are sure to be buoyed after their win in Dublin which all but put paid to Irelands attempts to secure second spot. With two home games to come against Austria and Germany. Sweden know that 6 points from their next two games will secure a spot in the playoffs.

The task is clear for Ireland. A win in Vienna, avoid defeat in Germany and put Kazakhstan to the sword in Dublin will leave Ireland with a slim chance of making the playoffs. Ireland have been known to pull a shock result from the bag when their backs are against the wall but it is a massive task and requires other results going in their favour. Still, we can dream.
