Manchester United Transfer News: 28 year old Belgian Thomas Vermaelen is expected to be Louis van Gaal’s first signing and with a deal expected to be completed after the World Cup.

Vermaelen has fallen out of favor at Arsenal behind first-choice team by Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

The former Ajax defender joined arsenal 5 years ago and his departure from the gunners will be a blow following Bacary Sagna’s departure. Vermaelen got off to a superb start with the gunners but injuries and a loss of form have seen him feature less regularly that he would have liked.

Vermaelen interestingly shares the same agent as Robin van Persie and it is expected that the defender will be purchased for a fee of less than £10 million due to the fact that he has only 1 year remaining on his contract.

The Belgian international only made 21 appearances for the gunners last year compared to the 45 he made in his debut season in English football scoring an impressive 8 goals.
