Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart will miss this year’s World Cup in Brazil due to a calf injury.
The 31 year old who plays his club football at Hamburger SV, had a poor season in the Bundesliga, and has now been ruled out of what could be the attacking midfielder’s last chance to win the most coveted trophy in world football.
A statement released on the Royal Dutch Football Association’s website revealed that van der Vaart will not be travelling with the Netherlands squad to Brazil. The 23-man squad will be announced on Saturday.
“Rafael van der Vaart will miss the World Cup in the Brazil,” the statement said.
“The Netherlands international has a calf strain in his right leg.”
“Coach Louis van Gaal has therefore decided not to include him in the final selection.”
Van der Vaart amassed 109 caps and 25 goals for his country. The injury means that the Dutch will be without the most experienced player to be included in the preliminary squad.
