With less than 12 days to go before the transfer window shuts until January, it’s time for SportsNewsIreland to take a quick run through the top transfer stories of the day.
Liverpool are set to try and sign Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos in the coming days according to reports from the Daily Star.
They have been linked with the Greek international for the most of the summer, but have been deterred due to his injury woes and the Bundesliga outfit’s £13m valuation. But Papadopoulos is back in full training, and if he can pass a rigourous medical he could be at Anfield very soon.
Just when you thought the Wayne Rooney to Chelsea transfer saga was over, up pops Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to re-ignite the discussion once again.
Reports from Tony Banks of the Daily Express of Chelsea preparing to table a bid worth in the region of £28 million has many wondering just how authentic the bid is.
Granted, Rooney is probably worth in the region of £30 million, but Chelsea already have three attackers in their squad with Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Roman Lukaku, and so it’s possible that this is all just mind games from the Portuguese manager in an effort to unsettle the Red Devils.
It’s no coincidence that his transfer talk about Rooney comes just days before the two sides are set to face off against each other in an early title battle.
Of course, Chelsea aren’t the only club interested in the England international.
The Daily Mirror’s John Cross reported on Tuesday evening that Arsene Wenger is still interested in the talented forward, and with all of his transfer fund still to play for, it’s possible that the Gunners could do the unthinkable, and actually outbid the Blues for his services. No doubt that would ease any fears of a crisis for Arsenal fans.
In other transfer news, it’s being reported by the Daily Mirror that Tottenham are set to continue splurging the cash this summer transfer window with the acquisition of Argenine striker Erik Lamela and defender Toby Alderweireld. Of course, this all comes just a day after they were reported to have signed Brazilian Willian.
And finally, with United failing to push through any big deals this summer, it looks like, their resources could be stretched even further by the departure of one of their bright, rising young stars.
According to a story published in the Daily Mail early on Wednesday morning, fast-paced left-back Alexander Buttner could be set for a loan spell in Portugal plying his trade with Besiktas. United fans will be hoping the Dutchman stays at the club to help them regain the title following some excellent displays last season.
