Shay Given dropped by Aston Villa as Guzan impresses

Updated: September 2, 2012

Villa drew 1-1 at the Sports Direct Arena with Guzan producing a heroic performance and it could prove to be a significant day in the former Republic of Ireland international’s career.

Speaking recently following his retirement from international football, Given had said it was his intention to prolong his club career with the decision.

Having been dropped today and his replacement performing valiantly, Given’s career at Villa Park may have come to a more significant crossroads than prolonging a career with Villa.

If Guzan continues to produce solid performances then Given will find it hard to get the number one slot back in the West Midlands.

The former Republic of Ireland legend has a huge call to make following today’s slightly shocking decision from Lambert, however it paid off so the manager has been vindicated.

Shay Given’s career looks to be heading from bad to worse recently and a horror show at Euro 2012 has been followed by some shaky Premier League performances.

Those performances have seemingly contributed to Guzan’s appearance at a ground where Given looked impenetrable for almost a decade.

Sitting on a bench at St.James’ Park was something most Newcastle fans only ever witnessed on League Cup nights in the North East.

Some may have been shocked at Given’s departure from the team-sheet today but in truth it had been coming due to some inept performances.

It will be interesting to see whether Given treats it as a challenge to reclaim his spot, or as a confirmation that the goalkeeper’s time at the top has come to an end.
