Moate’s Joe Ward gained a convincing 16 -6 win over Sweden’s Kennedy Katende in their opening bout at the final European Qualifier tournament in Trabzon, Turkey this evening.
The Irish light heavyweight champion took round one 4-2 , forged further ahead adding another four points to his opponent’s one in the second phase and cruised to victory adding a further eight points in the third and final round against three for his opponent.
Ward was never in any trouble against a very experienced opponent – the 27 years old from Sundsvall had qualified for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, behind Kenny Egan in that year’s qualifier but was no match for the 18 yrs old from Moate
This evening’s victory puts Ward through to the last sixteen in the final European Olympic qualifier for men.
In the 60 kg lightweight class, Ireland’s David Oliver Joyce met Joe Cordina, of Wales and although Cordina took an early lead the fight was ended when Joyce, having stormed back in the second, stopped his opponent in the third. So the first day ends with a 100 per cent record for Ireland.
