Adam Nolan qualifies for the London 2012 Olympics

Updated: April 20, 2012

Enniscorthy’s Adam Patrick Nolan, the Bray Garda who boxes out of the local Bray BC – and is coached by Peter Taylor – today became the 38th Irish athlete to qualify for London 2012 as a result of a comprehensive 19-10 win over Romania’s Ionut Gheorghe in Trabzon.

When the two met at the Hayri Gür Spor Salon at 14.58 local this afternoon, in their 69kg welterweight clash, the Irishman gave a clinical display of counter punching and was always in command taking the first round, 7-5,the second 8-3 and third and all important final round 4-2 .

Nolan’s win was all the more remarkable in that unlike most of the Irish squad, his work as a Garda, meant he was not able to take part in as much of the High Performance Unit’s training schedule as his colleagues but the win today now not only guarantees his place in London 2012 but also
in Saturday’s welterweight final where he meets Germany’s Patrick Wojcicki a 19-11 victor today over Turkey’s Abdulkadir Koroglu. Nolan has also proved himself a fine hurler and member of the Oulart-the-Ballagh club.It has been a good week for the hard working Garda as close friend and neighbour, Daryl Jacob, rode Neptune Collognes to win the Aintree Grand National only last weekend.

No one will be more delighted to celebrate Nolan’s success than the Taylor family , as Peter told the IABA’s Bernard O’Neill : “Katie will be glued to the results today and she’s totally behind Adam and the boys.
“Katie gets more nervous when Adam is in the ring than about any other fight,” Taylor senior is quoted as saying in the ‘Irish Independent’ . Peter Taylor himself was always confident that Adam Nolan would defeat though Romanian today though his opponent had eliminated Ireland’s John Joe Joyce in the 2008 Beijing Olympic qualifying tournament held in Italy.

Paddy Barnes and Tommy McCarthy will also try to reach Saturday’s finals in Trabzon when they enter the ring later this evening, though of course Barnes has the advantage of knowing that he has already qualified for London whereas McCarthy has to win Gold in Trabzon to achieve his dream.
