Former Ireland coach Eddie O’Sullivan believes that Joe Schmidt is the ideal candidate to take over from Declan Kidney when the Grand Slam winning coach decides to step down from the Ireland post.
Schmidt, who led Leinster to their second consecutive Heineken Cup final last weeekend, has gained much notice for his success with Leinster in his two years in the job and O’Sullivan, speaking to the Evening Hearld feels that he is the right man to succeed Kidney when the time comes.
“I think Joe Schmidt would be the obvious choice at this moment in time, based on the job he’s done. And he’s hugely popular as well,” said O’Sullivan.
“Given Leinster’s ability to perform at the top end of the game, this season has been extraordinarily consistent for him. I still feel uncomfortable speculating on the next Irish coach because I was there myself and people used to speculate (about me). Declan is still there. He’s doing a good job.”
