Captain Chris a likely Arkle runner

Sportsnewsireland understands that the Philip Hobbs trained novice chaser, Captain Chris, will now take his chance in Tuesday’s Arkle Chase rather than wait for the Jewson on Thursday.

There had been some question marks regarding which contest the horse would pitch up in, but a source close to the stable has revealed that in recent days connections have been leaning towards the 2mile race on the opening afternoon. If Captain Chris bypasses the Jewson Chase, it leaves Richard Johnson free to partner Wishful Thinking in that 2m 4f contest. Johnson had always been keen to run Captain Chris in Tuesday’s Arkle but trainer Philip Hobbs felt that the longer trip may suit his charge better.

In any case, our source has confirmed that Johnson will ride Captain Chris in whichever race he runs in next week. The horse was an easy winner at Sandown last time out and had previously run Medermit close over 2m 4f. There are slight doubts about the horses ability to act around a left handed track but connections are prepared to take the chance.
