Basketball Ireland has today announced the appointment of Mr Bernard J. O’Byrne as their new Secretary General

O’Byrne, a former chief executive of the FAI, will take up his post on Monday next, 21st March 2011. Speaking at his appointment, O’Byrne spoke about his delight at accepting the role and the challenges that lie ahead including building the sports profile “I am absolutely thrilled to be taking on the challenge of increasing the participation, commercial income and general profile of Basketball in Ireland. I believe that with approximately 300,000 people being involved in Basketball throughout the country it is somewhat of a sleeping giant in Irish sport. I am eager to get to work with all those in the Basketball family to achieve the maximum potential of this national organisation”.

Interestingly, Basketball is the third largest participation sport in Ireland with an estimated 300,000 active players. It is the largest indoor sport in Ireland and has the largest number of female participants of any sport in Ireland.
