Bangor’s James Espey qualifies for Olympics

Bangor’s James Espey, a member of the Ballyholme Yacht Club in Belfast Lough has achieved Olympic qualification on day four of the Laser World Championships in Boltenhagen , Germany.

Espey’s scores of 7(29),3,20,18,17,22,19 were enough to gain him a place in the ‘gold fleet’ where he lies in 30th position overall.

Espey therefore joins Annalise Murphy (Laser Radial), Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern (49er) as well as well as Peter O’Leary and David Burrows (Star) in the 2012 Olympic Games, the sailing events of which take place in Weymouth and Portland.

The rest of the Irish team qualified via the World Championships in Perth,Australia last December.

Reacting to Espey’s qualification, ISA Performance Director James O’Callaghan said : “ I am delighted for James to achieve Olympic qualification. He has worked hard as an independent athlete to achieve his goal and we look forward to working together as part of the Providence Resources Olympic Sailing Team to achieve further success at London 2012.”
