Whilst the recent men’s Olympic qualifier in Trabzon and the forthcoming Women’s World Championships in China have been receiving most of the headlines, the IABA are sensibly planning for the future.
Cork’s Luke Thomas has been named Irish captain for Saturday’s Senior Cadet clash with Scotland in Cork.
Ireland will meet the Scots at the Rochestown Park Hotel on Leeside.
Thomas, a bronze medal winner at the 2011 European Junior Championships, meets Scottish light-middleweight Daniel Purves on the night.
“It promises to be a very competitive. Scotland are sending over a very talented looking team and we’re all looking forward to what should be a top-class international, ” said IABA Director of Boxing Dominic O’Rourke.
Ireland also take on England in a Senior Cadet clash in Cork at the end of this month confirmed Irish coach Billy McClean.
The IABA are building up towards the 2012 European Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria in late June.
“We’re looking at the squads at the moment and we’re trying to give our Irish champions a run out at international level, said McClean.
“It will be a tough, hard international. Scotland always bring a tough team over here.It will be tough, but the boys will be up for this competition.”
Let us also hope that the IABA can arrange a similar programme for young Irish women boxers in near future. Time for an international series also involving England, Scotland and Wales?
