Katie Taylor, who is aiming for her 4th AIBA World lightweight title in-a-row, has received a bye into the last-32 and will meet either Rim Jouini (Tunisia) or Juliana da Rocha Canedo (Portugal), who meet tomorrow, on Monday afternoon.
Ceire Smith and Sinead Kavanagh will get Ireland’s campaign at the 7th AIBA World Women’s Championships underway with last-64 bouts in Qinhuangdao, China tomorrow.
Cavan BC flyweight Smith faces Veglina Svetlana of Tajikistan and Drimnagh BC middleweight Kavanagh is in against Francelis Paez Carmona of Venezuela on Saturday afternoon. Both are last-64 bouts.
Saturday’s and Monday’s sessions begin at 7am (Irish time).
Flyweight, lightweight and middleweight are the three Olympic weight categories for women at the Olympic Stadium in Qinhuangdao.
The 2012 AIBA World Women’s Championships is acting as the only Olympic qualifier for female boxers.
Three Olympic places are available in each of the three weight categories for European boxers.
Taylor was seeded number one for today’s lightweight draw.
