Irish Boxer Sinead Kavanagh loses in China

Drimnagh BC’s Sinead Kavanagh bowed out of the 7th AIBA World Championships in  China this afternoon, going under 23 – 19 to Venezuela’s Francelis Carmona Paez in their 75kg middleweight clash.

Kavanagh fought a gallant fight and lost each round only by the narrowest of margins  –  round by round scores being – 5-4  6-5 7-6  5-4 in the Venezuelan’s favour.

Having reached the last 16 in Barbados , Kavanagh had been hoping to go one better this time round but it was not to be. In particular her opponent proved elusive and moved around the ring with  speed and  though Kavanagh connected with some accurate , powerful punches she still lost the

opening round 5-4.  Round two was notable for lots of holding and pushing  and yet again it was Carmona Paez  who won that round to go ahead 11-9 at the half way stage.

By the end of round three, the Venezuelan had stretched that lead to 18:15 and though Kavanagh, as always, gave of her all she was unable to pull back the deficit – somewhat surprisingly since Kavanagh had landed  most of the  stronger punches, that round too went to Paez, this time  5-4 and so no happy ending this time for Sinead.  She thanked her supporters back home as well as her coaches for their support  but it simply was not her day.
