Cavan BC’s Ceire Smith this morning lost her last 16 bout at the 7th AIBA world championships in China, going under to Poland’s highly experienced Karolina Michalczuk.
The referee stopped the contest at end of round 3 when Smith was already 23: 7 down.
The Pole took the initiative from the outset and led 12:1 at end of the first before continuing the onslaught and adding another 11 points in the second though Ceire fought hard and gained six of her own. Nonetheless it was an encouraging tournament in China for the 20 years old from Cavan and provided that the IABA can devote proper funding to the women’s sport, then she has a fine future ahead.
Praise to her Cavan coach Brian McKeown as well as to Peter Taylor and Zaur Antia in China. Occasionally in boxing one learns much more from a heavy loss and the experience gained will stand her in good stead in future years.
