Crewe starlet set for to Manchester United

Updated: May 21, 2012

This season has not just been exciting in the English premier league, it seems to have had exciting twists and turns across the globe. In League two this was no different as Crewe Alexandra battled to gain the final play-off place and now find themselves in the play-off final next Sunday. The contribution of one young player has been evident all season. Young attacking midfielder Nick Powell has made forty-four appearances this season scoring fifteen goals.

The eighteen year old midfielder has been attracting a lot of attention from premiership clubs like Tottenham and Manchester United. According to the Daily Mirror the two were set to go head-to-head in battle for the young starlet. Powell is considered hot property right now due to his thunderous strike, his crisp passing and maybe most notably his age. Powell is being touted as the latest in a line of fine productions from the Crewe academy that has previously churned out players like Dean Ashton, Seth Johnson and the great Danny Murphy.

Powell picked up both Player of the year and young player of the year award at Crewe’s end of season awards as well as goal of the season for his stunner in the 4-3 victory over Gillingham. Despite these accolades being thrust upon Powell he is likely to have his sights set firmly on the League two play-off final and getting Crewe promoted.

The word from the Daily Mail is that Manchester United have snapped up the hotly tipped star for £4million. This could prove to be a bargain if Powell can reach the potential everyone believes he is capable of. This also serves as a signal of intent from Sir Alex Ferguson, it shows he is not going to be bullied into signing proven entities for £20-40million for someone who will be at their best for just two or three more seasons. Ferguson is continuing in the same management style he always has, build for the future and build a team capable of dominating for the next decade not just the next season.

It remains to be seen how good Powell will turn out but if Sir Alex’s past record is anything to go by then we can expect something pretty special from the latest star the Crewe Alexandra talent pool.
