Fresh from helping inspire Leinster to another Heineken Cup triumph; Brian O’Driscoll has been selected as Ireland captain for the tour of New Zealand next month.
O’Driscoll, who missed most of the season with a shoulder/neck injury, looked close to his brilliant best in Saturday’s European final and was one of 11 Leinster players named in Declan Kidney’s 29-man Ireland squad to face the world champions in three Tests.
Ireland manager Declan Kidney has named three uncapped players. They are Ulster prop Declan Fitzpatrick and Munster pair, hooker Mike Sherry as well as wing Simon Zebo. A further four places are yet to be filled as the Cork native waits for fitness updates on several players, including Paul O’Connell, who has a knee problem.
Ulster man Darren Cave has been recalled after a three year absence following a stellar season.
Ireland play world champions New Zealand in Auckland on 9th June, with Tests in Christchurch and Hamilton to follow on the 16th and 23rd June respectively.
